Farm Stays in Western Australia

Western Australia does farm stays at two very different distances from Perth. The Swan Valley starts barely half an hour from the CBD, an old river-flat farming district of vineyards, small holdings and roadside produce stalls that makes an easy first taste of farm life for city kids. Three hours south, Margaret River is the state's great escape: cattle and sheep country threaded between world-class vineyards, tall karri forest and a coastline of surf breaks and sea cliffs.

The south-west corner is green in a way that surprises first-time visitors to WA — winter rains keep the paddocks lush from June through October, and spring brings out wildflowers along every fence line. A farm stay in Western Australia's south-west pairs naturally with the region's food and wine; plenty of hosts will point you to a cellar door in one direction and a quiet beach in the other.

Distances beyond the south-west are serious, so most travellers base themselves in one region rather than touring. Both regions below reward a slower pace: two or three nights on a property, day trips out, and dinner cooked with whatever the farm gate stall had that morning.
