Farm Stays in Barossa Valley, SA

An hour north-east of Adelaide, the Barossa is Australia's most famous wine valley — home to Penfolds, Henschke and shiraz vines older than any in Europe — but it has always been mixed farming country too. The Silesian and English settlers who arrived in the 1840s planted vines alongside wheat, ran sheep on the ranges, and built the stone farmhouses, smokehouses and Lutheran churches that still define Tanunda, Angaston, Nuriootpa and Lyndoch. Drive the back roads today and vineyards give way to grazing country and grain within a few minutes.

That heritage makes a farm stay in the Barossa Valley more textured than a standard wine-country weekend. Properties here might run sheep or a few cattle between vine blocks, and the valley's food culture goes far beyond cellar doors: the Barossa Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings in Angaston, Maggie Beer's farm shop, artisan bakers and butchers still working to settler recipes. High ground at Mengler Hill and the Barossa Sculpture Park gives you the whole valley in one view.

Vintage, from February into April, is the valley at its most alive — trucks of grapes on the roads, ferment in the air, and the Barossa Vintage Festival in odd-numbered years. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with bare vines, fires in the cellar doors and lamb season in the paddocks; spring greens the ranges. Whenever you come, book Saturday-morning plans around the farmers' market — it's the valley's living room.
