Farm Stays in Northern Territory
Farm stays in the Northern Territory are a different proposition to anywhere else in the country — here the farms are stations, the paddocks are measured in square kilometres, and the working animals are as likely to be buffalo and brahman cattle as anything you'd find down south. Around Katherine, three hours south of Darwin, pastoral properties and mango farms sit alongside gorge country carved by the Katherine River.
The Territory runs on two seasons rather than four. The dry, from May to September, is when everything happens: mustering, clear warm days, cool nights around a fire, and the waterfalls and gorges at their most accessible. The wet transforms the land into something greener and wilder, and most travellers plan around it.
A Territory farm stay is less about petting-zoo mornings and more about scale — watching a helicopter muster, riding out at dawn before the heat, hearing how a family runs cattle across country the size of a small European nation. For travellers heading up or down the Stuart Highway, it's the most memorable overnight stop on the map.
