Farm Stays in Victoria
Victoria is compact enough that almost all of its farm country sits within an easy drive of Melbourne, which makes it the simplest state in Australia for a weekend farm stay. An hour east and you're among the vines and berry farms of the Yarra Valley; an hour and a bit south and you've swapped city traffic for the vineyards and back roads of the Mornington Peninsula. Neither trip requires much more planning than a full tank of fuel.
Go further and the character changes completely. The High Country in the state's north-east is genuine mountain cattle country — the land of the Man from Snowy River — where autumn turns the valleys gold and horse trails run for days. South-west along the Great Ocean Road, dairy farms sit on green headlands above the Southern Ocean, and a farm stay there often comes with the sound of surf as well as cattle.
Victorian seasons are sharper than the mainland's north, and that's part of the appeal: wood fires and misty paddocks in winter, long dry evenings in summer. If you're travelling with your own horse, look to the High Country first — it has the best network of horse-friendly properties and public trails in the state.
