Farm Stays in Sunshine Coast Hinterland, QLD

Behind the Sunshine Coast's beaches, the Blackall Range rises 400 metres to a green ribbon of dairy country, rainforest remnants and hilltop villages — Maleny, Montville, Mapleton, Flaxton — with the Glass House Mountains standing like sentinels on the plain below. The escarpment towns are about 90 minutes north of Brisbane and 30 from the coast, but the altitude changes everything: cooler air, rolling pasture, morning mist in the valleys, and lookouts where the whole coastline unrolls to the horizon.

This was one of Queensland's founding dairy districts, and it still shows — Maleny's dairies make some of the state's best cheese and yoghurt, and farm stays in the Sunshine Coast hinterland often revolve around a working herd, with milking, calf feeding and paddock rounds part of the guest routine. Between farm jobs, the region delivers: rainforest walks at Kondalilla and Mary Cairncross, the Maleny Botanic Gardens' aviaries, and the galleries and cafes strung along the Montville ridge.

The hinterland works year-round. Winter days are sunny and mild with genuinely cold nights (fires are standard equipment up here); summer is warmer but noticeably softer than the coast below, with storms tracking across the Glass House Mountains in the afternoons. It also pairs neatly with a beach holiday — Noosa, Mooloolaba and Caloundra are all within 40 minutes of the range.
