Farm Stays in Hunter Valley, NSW
The Hunter is Australia's oldest wine region, but drive the back roads around Pokolbin, Broke, Wollombi and Lovedale and you'll see it's never stopped being farm country — vineyards share the valley floor with beef cattle, olive groves and horse studs, all backed by the blue wall of the Brokenback Range. Two and a half hours north of Sydney, it's the classic weekend escape that somehow still feels rural once you're off the main tourist strip.
Farm stays in the Hunter Valley tend to pair animals with indulgence: feed the cattle or collect eggs in the morning, then spend the afternoon at a cellar door tasting the semillon and shiraz the region is famous for. Plenty of properties sit within ten or fifteen minutes of the Pokolbin wine strip, so designated drivers have short trips and long lunches at places like the valley's hatted restaurants are genuinely doable from a farmhouse base.
Autumn is vintage season, when the vines turn gold and the valley smells faintly of ferment; winter brings still, frosty mornings, hot-air balloons at dawn and fires at night. Summer is warm and busy with concerts at the vineyard amphitheatres. Whatever the season, book early for weekends — the Hunter fills up fast, while midweek stays are quieter and often cheaper.
