According to the Guinness World Records the tallest and heaviest horse documented throughout history was a shire horse by the name of Sampson. Born in Bedfordshire, England in 1846, Sampson reached a peak height of 219cm (7 ft 2.5 in) and a weight of 1,524kg (3360 lb). Sampson was later renamed ‘Mammoth the horse’ due to his sheer size. The height of a horse is measured from the ground to the withers, which is the area right behind the neck of the horse, or the highest horse shoulder point. Shire horses are known for being a tall breed of horses. And with their large stature, shire horses were often used as working horses on farms or transport. Sampson was bred by a gentleman by the name of Thomas Cleaver at Toddington Mills, Bedforshire, England.
